“I love you, a thousand times over. And I will never apologize for it.”
Why it took me this long to finally read this is beyond me. Admittedly, it took a few chapters for me to actually “feel” the story but I kept on reading because I was that hooked and it was brilliantly good.
I’m always afraid to start an overly hyped book. There are only two possible outcomes: it’s either the book will live up to its hype or I will be an extremely disappointed reader.
Well I’m telling you, this book lived up to my expectations. And more.
Initially, I was overwhelmed with the language and premise – I was having a hard time being familiar with the names, places and terms not to mention that the first half felt a little slow for me but all in all, I found myself enjoying this story, more than I have expected.
The two main characters are easy to adore. Both are complex and multidimensional. Khalid stole my heart. Truly. He is a force, an enigma, a presence. He has the kind of depth that you will just drown in. He is layers and layers of secrets and you would wish to be the one to uncover them all.
Meanwhile, Shahrzad is the kind of heroine I always like to read about. Fierce and strong, brave and bold – she is one bad ass lady through and through. I felt her determination yet she was not afraid to acknowledge what she wants. She is young but it didn’t stop her from standing out.
As much as I cheer for these two main characters, I would also like to praise the author for taking time to create fascinating secondary characters that you would also want to get to know more. Kudos Renee!!!!! Your character development alone already won me over.
The fantasy aspect of this story, though not glaringly defined provided a touch of color in this intriguing tale. Quite frankly, it’s not that heavy on fantasy but I still appreciated it all the same. Another wow factor for me is how the romance played out. It was a gradual slow burning romance that just consumed me and the moment it unfolds– it was simply beautiful. There were no intense, prolonged and overly defined sex scenes BUT you will feel the steam, the heat, the romance jumping out from the pages. And that my friend, is how good this author is.
I have loved every aspect of this story. The writing is impressive and though there are times when I feel that it is becoming too descriptive, the overall feel of the book is arresting. Your imagination will truly be tested, your mind will be put to work. You will leave the comforts of your home and find yourself transported to Rey. I’m new to this author and her writing but I was impressed. BIG TIME!!
Aside from the seemingly slow first half and the over descriptions, I cannot find any other flaw to this story. Except Renee, why that cliffy girl???????????!!!! Are you trying to hurt us on purpose?!!
