“This is our canvas. Let’s paint it how we want it.”
Blurb via Goodreads:
He was my older brother’s best friend.
He was never supposed to be mine.
I thought we would get it out of our system and move on.
One of us did.
One of us left.
Now he’s back, looking at me like he wants to devour me. And all those feelings I’d turned into anger are brewing into something else, something that terrifies me.
He broke my heart last time.
This time he’ll obliterate it.
Kaleidoscope Hearts is the story of Estelle Reuben and Oliver Hart who grew up as close as siblings can be with Oliver being Estelle’s brother’s best friend. Over the years, Oliver has been a permanent fixture in the Hart household and a more prominent part of Estelle’s teenage years. To friends and family, Oliver is just like Victor, an older brother and protector to Estelle. But only the two of them knows how much they started to mean to each other way outside the brotherly-sisterly affection. They have so much history but somehow had to part ways. I won’t say that life got in the way but it was more of a series of choices, situations and events which kept Estelle away from Oliver (or is it the other way around?).
“The difference is that it’s already broken, but I use the pieces to rebuilt it. The difference is that the heart has a second chance, and maybe it’ll get broken again, but it’s already shattered, so maybe the fall won’t be as bad.”
Circumstances happened that Estelle, now an adult, had to go back and live with her brother, Victor until she gets back on her feet. There, she was reunited with Oliver and as much as she didn’t initially welcome him back into her life, found Oliver wherever she goes and realized that there are emotions and feelings that you just cannot bury forever.
“Love is beautiful, shattering, moving, haunting. Love is everything.”
This novel jumps in and out from the past to the present; from Oliver to Estelle’s POV and it is a beautiful story about second chances, of falling down, getting up and falling in love again. It is a heartwarming tale of how life never gives us what we want so easily. Most days, we have to work hard to get what we want maybe because we are being taught to value the things/people that are important to us. It is a story of family, friendship and the risks we take for the people we love. It is a story of how someone can be broken but still survive by picking up the pieces. It gives one hope that no matter the brokenness, people still deserve love and can reciprocate love.
“THE THING ABOUT life is that you never know when it will show you something that touches you so deeply that you can’t help but be grateful for everything . . . even the bad.”
This book just works wonders! I love everything about it from the cover, to the main characters, to the families, the friends, the setting, the storytelling, the heartache and the romance. It’s not angst ridden but there is something about the way Claire writes that will just urge you to turn that next page and to not put it down until your heart is full and singing love songs.
